Artificial Intelligence (AI) : Boon or Bane?

Most of us might remember that during our school days we used to write one very common essay, is science a Boon or Bane? But now in 21st century a certain section of science and technology, which is a big boom! Is posing the same question again i.e. Artificial Intelligence (AI) : Boon or Bane.

Artificial Intelligence is the intelligence that a machine or software can exhibit. It is the development of machines, software’s or programs that can perform tasks without the requirement of an external human interference. In most of cases AI outperforms humans with respect to speed and accuracy.

Even though we don’t realize, we are already surrounded with various AIs without which our lives would be quite difficult. A smart phone that has become one of our basic needs is the best example of AI, recent features like iPhone X face ID.

In the present and the upcoming future Artificial Intelligence has a lot of use. There are many fields of works like mining, which often causes death or injury, can be performed with the help of Robots. They can also be used for space exploration. The most important feature of AI is that the chance of errors would be much less related to humans. An AI can learn from its mistakes (Reinforcement learning) and can grow with experience thus making it far more efficient. AI can be used to solve problems in science that are yet unsolved by human.

A major worry about Artificial Intelligence is that it’s seizing our jobs, displacing more and more human workers as robots grow increasingly sophisticated. That said, but there are some experts who believe AI will create more jobs than it will replace. This debate is still pretty much wide open. Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, and many other big names in science and technology have recently expressed concern in the media about the risks posed by AI, joined by many leading AI researchers. The fundamental question asked by these minds is that if AI has the potential to become more intelligent than any human, then there is no way to predict what the future holds, especially if they end up ‘outsmarting’ us. However, few big names like Mark Zuckerberg have very optimistic view on AI and supported it.

Some people say glass is half filled and some say glass is half empty but very few will say it is half filled with water and half filled with air. Whatever, I believe, Artificial Intelligence is a double-edged sword. Mankind have to use it very carefully and judiciously. The next best step would be to put some regulation on it like banning the use of AI in the development of Military weapons.
