In the introductory scene of Deadpool (2016), we find Wade Wilson, the masked mutant vigilante and the ex-merc played by Ryan Reynolds jiggling in the backseat of a taxi. The Hindi song “Mera Joota Hai Japani” by Mera Naam Joker (1970) plays in the taxi stereo, much to the delight of the adorable Indian taxi driver Dopinder (Karan Soni).
In Deadpool 2, released this Friday, there is a recovery of this moment in a much cooler way. Towards the climax of the movie, when Deadpool, Cable, and Domino head out to stop Firefist from torching an orphanage, we hear another Indian song playing in Dopinder’s cab. And this time, it’s ‘Yun Hi Chala Chal Raahi’ from the Swad movie by Shah Rukh Khan, highly admired in 2004.
It’s not that. To the delight of Indian fans, when Cable (Josh Brolin) orders Dopinder to drop the music, Deadpool intervenes and calls him racist. This whistling moment is an absolute delight for SRK fans who would be surprised to find this special tribute in Deadpool 2.
If you thought that Ranveer Singh’s Hindi voice over and Karan Soni’s adorable performance were the only two Indian connections in Deadpool 2, well, that special and hilarious scene will leave you in pieces.
